Homeschool Reading Specialist

Yes, you can teach your child to read!

Reading 101

I worked as a Reading Specialist in the public education system before coming home to teach. In talking with parents over the years, it seems that reading instruction is one of the “scarier” aspects of homeschooling for some, especially when it comes to the beginning stages of teaching a child to read, but the truth is you can teach your child to read and it can be one of the greatest joys of your homeschool experience. You can be just as effective, if not more so, than a trained classroom teacher. Be encouraged – you can do it!

Let’s start off with some basics. The face of reading instruction in public education is changing with the adoption of the common core, but I would like to share the elements of reading that have been considered most important since The National Reading Panel (NRP) shared it’s research with the world in 2000. The fourteen members of the NRP were considered to be the best of the best in their respective fields. School administrators, working teachers, and scientists whose area of study was reading research comprised this panel. After this panel revealed it’s findings, the teaching of reading began to change… for the good.

In this thread of posts, I would like to share with you what the findings of this panel. This information will prepare you to build a strong reading foundation, analyze reading curricula, determine if you need to do some remediation with your child, and make you feel more equipped to teach your child to read, which is what this blog is all about.

Overview – Best Reading Practices

Here is a one-page summary that gives an overview of the National Reading Panel, their findings, and the necessary components of a solid reading education.
