Writing on Wednesday ~ Publishing: Writing a Book With Your Child

Recently we went on our first family vacation in a very long time. It will also be our last before we shoot an arrow out of our quiver. It was a pretty special time, so much so, we wrote a book about it!

Lu wrote a “sloppy copy” of her story. This is the “mistakes don’t matter” draft of anything that you publish with your child. Normally we would edit the draft and I would pick out grammar and punctuation skills that need to be taught, but this time, I simply let her read her rough draft to me while I typed it on the computer.

I selected a book template from my word processing program to make our book. If you don’t have a template, this can still be easily done by typing text and inserting pictures on standard paper.

Writing on Wednesday ~ Here’s My New Favorite Language Arts Activity!

I discovered a great way to practice grammar and writing skills! Dragon Dictation is an app that converts speech to text. I use it in two different ways. I allow my child to dictate a story into the phone or I dictate a portion of text from a book we are reading. Dragon converts what is spoken and types it onto the screen, however, there are no punctuations marks, only words! It’s an editing paradise!
