Take Care Of Yourself, Mom

on July 22, 2014

Today I am featuring the Mom Bundle. Why?

A lesson I learned the hard way ~ you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. As moms, we are hardwired to take care of others. We wear many hats, fulfill many different roles, and perform so many different tasks as moms. Typically, we feel guilty for doing something nice for ourselves. We view taking care of others as a greater work than taking care of ourselves. However, in order to take care of others, we must take care of ourselves first. (I want to delve into this with you as I have time to develop some posts about this!)

When I was teaching in the public school there was a seminar I wanted to attend. It was not school related, but it would require that I take 2 days off work if I were to participate. I called my principal to ask for the time hoping he wouldn’t ask me why I was taking the time off, but you know what happened ~ he asked me why I needed time off. I told him the truth and expected to be teaching those two days. Surprisingly, he said something like this to me:

“Mrs. B, how do you not know that attending something like this would help you be a better teacher? It may not be related to school, but if you take two days off to attend this conference, you might come back refreshed. If you rest and feel better, you’ll be a better teacher. We all need ‘mental health’ days sometimes.”

He was a great man to work for! So mom, I encourage you to take care of yourself. The Mom Bundle in this week’s big curriculum sale is $10. You get tons of resources that can help you tame the madness of a typical day. If you see something you like, check it out. If you don’t, still plan something to day that will refresh you.
